NOT A ONE SIZE FITS ALL
SOLUTION - Most of the firms
you hear marketing want to sell you an OIC (Offer In Compromise). Sometimes an Offer is a great
solution. However, I have seen Offers submitted to the IRS by the "chains" that not only had no hope of
winning, but it was THE WORST solution that could have been submitted to the IRS. Sometimes it's a bad
idea because it stops the IRS collection statute of limitations from running out (the IRS has limits on how
long they have to collect the tax, and an OIC will increase that time... which isn't always in your best
interest).
Don't expect a salesperson
to explain this. They don't get paid if the taxes will just go away on their own! If they are in
sales and not a professional working with the IRS on a daily basis, there is a good chance they don't even
understand these complicated rules and the types of actions that can stop the IRS's collection clock from
ticking... Not to mention, if an Offer fails, you have just handed the IRS a complete path to your
assets and income streams.
This is NOT something to be
taken lightly. I have seen MANY offers that when submitted had NO chance of winning from the day they
were submitted. It's not a good idea to give the IRS a perfect path through your finances unless you
have some hope of getting a solution! You can't take it back once given. This is where peace of
